Golden Hour is Deserved's shortlist for the twenty minutes a day when the sun drops low and the view you came for turns to honey and rose gold. The edit collects stays where that light actually reaches you — from the terrace, the water or the bed — rather than only the postcard.

It moves by more than three hours over the year. On 15 July the sun sets at about 20:37 local time, on 15 October at about 18:44, and on 15 January at about 17:25 — figures computed with the NOAA solar equations for a flat sea horizon. Oía faces west across the caldera, so the sun goes down over open water. Be on your terrace half an hour before, because the best colour comes in the minutes before the disc touches the sea, not after.

From Zermatt, at sunrise. The face you see from the village looks east, so the first sun lights it from the summit down in gold and red — a show of a few minutes that photographers get up for. In the evening, the sun sits behind the mountain for most of the year: you watch the peak as a dark outline against a sky that turns gold, then silver. Both are worth a window seat, but if you only set one alarm in Zermatt, set it for dawn.

No — and that is not a flaw, just geography. Ravello looks south-east over the Gulf of Salerno, and the sun goes down behind the Lattari mountains to the west. What you get instead is the whole coastline below you turning soft gold while the sea darkens. The sun rising out of the gulf is the view the famous terrace of Villa Cimbrone faces. If you want the disc touching the water, that is Oía or Camps Bay in this edit.

Because the Maldives sit just north of the equator, where the sun drops almost vertically into the horizon instead of sliding along it. Measured as the time the sun takes from 6 degrees above to 4 degrees below a flat horizon, the window in the Raa Atoll lasts about 41 to 44 minutes all year — against roughly 50 to 55 minutes in Oía and an hour or more in the Alps. The upside: sunset barely moves on the clock, between about 17:55 and 18:30 local time in every month we checked. Plan dinner around it once and the plan holds for the whole stay.
