Jungle Villas
In short A jungle villa is defined by what surrounds it, not by what is inside it. This edit gathers private-pool houses set directly within tropical forest — in Bali, Tulum, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast and above Chiang Mai — chosen for houses the jungle actually reaches, rather than resort villas with a landscaped garden.
Wake to birdsong, swim in a pool wrapped in green, and fall asleep to rain on the leaves. Villas that disappear into the jungle — with every comfort intact.

What a jungle villa actually is
- Where the green stops. Ask for a photograph taken from the pool towards the house, and one taken from the road. Both exist; only one is usually published.
- What "private" covers. Your own walled garden, a deck a shared path runs past, and a pool split between two villas are all listed as private pools.
- The last kilometre. Surface, lighting, whether a normal hire car manages it, and whether you will be driving it after dark.
- What is open to the outside. Open-air bathrooms and screened living rooms are the design here — check that the bedroom, at least, seals and cools.
- What it sounds like. Jungle is not quiet. Cicadas, howler monkeys and rain on a metal roof are the point for some guests and the end of the holiday for others.
The honest calendar
| Where | Driest / clearest window | What the other months mean |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud, Bali | April to October, with August the driest month at around 15 mm of rain | The northwest monsoon runs November to March and peaks in December at roughly 290 mm. Ubud lies inland: expect more cloud and more afternoon thunderstorms than the southern beach resorts, in any month. |
| Chiang Mai, Thailand | November into early December — after the rains, before the smoke | Crop residue is burned across northern Thailand from December to April. IQAir measured its highest PM2.5 concentrations in January, February and March — three to nine times the rest-of-year average in 2020. The rains end it within days, but the rains are also the rains. |
| Santa Teresa, Costa Rica | December to March — the Pacific dry season as defined by the Costa Rica Tourism Board | Rain from May to October, with November a month of transition. The forest is at its greenest and loudest exactly when it is wettest, which for this kind of house is the trade rather than the catch. |
| Tulum, Mexico | December to March | The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks statistically around 10 September (NOAA). Sargassum seaweed is reported on the Caribbean beaches mainly from spring into late summer — a beach question rather than a jungle one, but worth knowing if you plan to swim in the sea as well as the pool. |

Common questions
Which stays are in Jungle Villas?
This collection currently holds 4 stays: Canopy Villa, Selva, The Rainforest House, The Teak House. Every one is picked by hand — we would rather show you three places worth booking than thirty that fill a page.
What do stays in Jungle Villas cost?
Nightly rates in this collection start at around €210 and reach about €480, depending on the house, the season and the room. Those are orientation figures rather than live rates — check dates with our booking partner for what you would actually pay.
Who is Jungle Villas for?
A jungle villa is defined by what surrounds it, not by what is inside it. This edit gathers private-pool houses set directly within tropical forest — in Bali, Tulum, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast and above Chiang Mai — chosen for houses the jungle actually reaches, rather than resort villas with a landscaped garden.
Does "private pool" always mean a pool only you can use?
No, and this is where listings differ most. The same two words cover a pool inside your own walled garden, a plunge pool on a deck that a shared path runs past, and a pool split between two villas on a rota. Ask for the site plan or the drive-up photograph rather than the hero shot. Where a pool is genuinely private, the listing tends to show it from several angles — because there is nothing that needs to stay out of frame.
How secluded is too secluded?
The useful measure is not distance but the last kilometre and what happens after dark. Twenty minutes from town can mean a paved road, or an unlit track with a ford across it that you will drive twice a day in a hire car. Seclusion you have to drive to for every dinner stops feeling romantic somewhere around the third evening; seclusion with a kitchen, a cook or a village within walking distance does not. Ask how you get dinner, and ask whether the road is lit.
Are jungle villas air-conditioned, or open to the outside?
Many of the best ones are deliberately open: bathrooms without glass, living space with screens instead of windows, a roof that keeps the rain off and nothing else. That is the architecture rather than a shortcoming — and it is also why the bedroom is usually the one fully enclosed, air-conditioned room in the house. If insects, humidity or rain noise cost you sleep, check specifically whether the bedroom seals and cools, and treat the rest of the house as outdoors.
When is the best time to book a jungle villa?
It depends entirely on which jungle, because the four destinations in this edit run almost opposite calendars. Bali is driest from April to October, Costa Rica's Pacific coast from December to March, Tulum from December to March — while northern Thailand is at its clearest in November, after the rains and before the agricultural burning season begins. The table further down this page sets the four side by side.
