A honeymoon has two dates, and the first one decides

The wedding date is fixed first, so it is the wedding date that chooses the destination. Almost every honeymoon list is written the other way round: here are the dream places, pick one. But the twelve houses in this edit sit in three different climate systems, and their best months do not overlap. Deciding where before deciding when is how couples end up in paradise in the wrong month.
The clearest case is the pair that appears on every list. The Maldives Meteorological Service dates the dry northeast monsoon, Iruvai, to January, February and March. Météo-France Polynésie française puts the cool, less humid season around Bora Bora at May to October and notes that cyclones occur only in the warm season from November to April. The two most photographed honeymoon destinations on earth are seasonal mirrors: there is no month in which both are at their best.
Cape Town adds a third calendar, because it lies on the other side of the equator: Aria in Camps Bay is at its driest from December to February, with about 8 mm of rain in February, while May, June and July each bring 80 to 85 mm. The Mediterranean houses — Oía, Positano, Ravello, Portofino — want June to September. Couples marrying in high summer therefore have the easiest choice on this list, and couples marrying in winter have the most interesting one.
Once the month has narrowed the field, these are the things that actually differ between two houses at the same price:
  • How private the privacy stays. A villa with its own staff is secluded until someone has to bring dinner. Ask when the house is yours alone and when it is not.
  • The length of the last leg. The transfer is part of the honeymoon and the most tiring part of it. A boat or seaplane at the end of a long-haul flight is a second travel day, not a detail.
  • Whether you can choose where to eat. On a one-resort island you eat where you are. In Positano or Ubud you walk out and decide nightly. Twelve dinners is long enough for that to matter.
  • Adults only, or not. Some of these houses are, some are not, and none of them say so in a photograph. It is a one-line question to the hotel.
  • One room or a whole house. A suite and a villa are different kinds of fortnight — the villa gives you two rooms to be quiet in, which sounds trivial until it is not.

Married in June? The shortlist is not the one for January

This is the table we would want ourselves: not the best time to visit one country, but which of these twelve houses is in its right season on the date you are already committed to. The figures are the ones we use across the site, drawn from the national weather services and long-run climate records listed below.

Chiang Mai: crop residue is burned across northern Thailand from December to April, and IQAir measured its highest PM2.5 concentrations in January, February and March. April and MayBoth Bali houses, as the dry season begins in April — and the far south around Uluwatu is among the least rainy parts of the island in any month. Portofino from mid-April, for the harbour and the coastal paths rather than for swimming.The Aegean and Amalfi if swimming is the point: the sea off the Amalfi Coast is around 19 °C in May, and Santorini is warm enough to swim in only from July. Costa Rica enters its rains in May. Chiang Mai is still inside the burning window through April. The Maldives are transitional in April, no longer reliably dry.
June to AugustThe widest choice of the year. All four Mediterranean houses: Santorini sees about 1 mm of rain in July and August and the sea peaks at 24.5 °C, Positano and Ravello have around three rain days a month with the sea at 23 to 26 °C, Portofino reaches 24 to 25 °C. Both Bali villas, August the driest month at about 15 mm. Bora Bora, in its cool season.The Maldives, in the wet southwest monsoon that runs from mid-May to November. Cape Town, in its rainy winter: 80 to 85 mm in each of May, June and July. Costa Rica, with rain from May to October. Chiang Mai, in the rains. On Santorini, note the meltemi — a persistent north wind that peaks in July and August, often at Force 5 to 6.
September and OctoberSantorini and the Amalfi Coast, where September is one of the best months of the year. Both Bali houses, to the end of October. Bora Bora, to the end of its cool season in October.Portofino — and this is the one that surprises people. Measured at nearby Genoa, September brings about 135 mm of rain and October about 170 mm, the wettest month of the year: the exact opposite of the southern shoulder season. Only the first half of September is a safe bet. Costa Rica is at its wettest on the Pacific side, and the Maldives are still in the wet monsoon.
November and DecemberChiang Mai has its one clear window here: November into early December, after the rains and before the smoke. Cape Town comes into its dry summer in December. The Maldives turn transitional in December, on the way back to the dry months.Bora Bora, which enters its warm, humid season in November — the only part of the year in which cyclones occur there, a risk Météo-France describes as low. The Mediterranean is turning: Positano and Ravello see around ten rain days in each of November and December.

The one honeymoon detail that has nothing to do with the house

A honeymoon is the only holiday that can be booked in a name its travellers do not yet legally hold, and that is where an otherwise perfect trip comes apart at the check-in desk. The rule itself is simple and universal: airlines carry the person named on the travel document.
For couples travelling on a German passport, the Federal Foreign Office spells out the consequence: what matters in every case is that the name on the ticket matches the name in the passport. The family name in an existing passport cannot be amended, so a new passport has to be applied for at the passport office with the marriage certificate — and production by the Bundesdruckerei usually takes several weeks. A marriage certificate is not a travel document and will not bridge the gap at the gate.
That leaves three clean ways through, and the first is usually the best: book the honeymoon in the name that is in the passport you will travel on, and change the passport afterwards. The Foreign Office names the other two — a provisional passport, or an arrangement with your passport office to apply some weeks before the wedding and collect the new passport immediately after it. The provisional route has its own catch, which the same office states plainly: a few countries do not accept a provisional passport for entry or for visa-free entry, so the destination has to be checked before that plan is made.
The second logistics trap is the last leg. Trans Maldivian flies its seaplanes only from sunrise to sunset and asks guests to land in Malé by 15:30 local time to reach the resort on the same day; on the return, morning departures from about 9 AM onwards are the ones it can serve. A Saturday afternoon wedding and the obvious evening flight therefore put the first night of a marriage in Malé rather than over the lagoon — worth knowing while the flights are still refundable.

This is the one collection we deliberately allow to be larger than the others, because a honeymoon is the trip people are least willing to compromise on and the seasons split the list anyway. Twelve houses drawn from across the shortlist, each chosen for privacy first, for one view that could not be had elsewhere second, and never for being the most expensive room in its region. We are marrying in summer — does that rule any of these out?

Yes, and it is worth knowing before you fall in love with a photograph. A June-to-August honeymoon puts the Mediterranean houses, both Bali villas and Bora Bora in their best months. It puts the Maldives in the wet southwest monsoon, Cape Town in its rainy winter — 80 to 85 mm in each of May, June and July — and Chiang Mai in the rains. None of that makes a trip impossible; it changes what you should expect from the sky. The month table above lists every house against every wedding date.

Maldives or Bora Bora?

Let the date answer it. The Maldives Meteorological Service dates the dry northeast monsoon to January, February and March, and records 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day in those months against 7 to 9 in every other. Météo-France puts the cooler, less humid season in French Polynesia at May to October, and notes that cyclones occur only in the warm season from November to April. The two are near-mirrors, so there is no month that favours both — which also means a honeymoon taking in both is a honeymoon that compromises on one.

Which name goes on the flight ticket after the wedding?

The one in the passport you will actually travel on. The German Federal Foreign Office is unambiguous about it: what matters in every case is that the name on the ticket matches the name in the passport. And check the last leg before you book the first: Trans Maldivian flies its seaplanes only from sunrise to sunset and asks guests to land in Malé by 15:30 local time to reach the resort the same day. A Saturday wedding and an evening arrival means the first night of the marriage is spent near the airport, not over the lagoon.
